In brief

  • Coinbase and Bitget debut as first crypto exchange sponsors in EWC history
  • France's updated regulatory framework for digital asset advertising enabled the sponsorship
  • EWC 2026 features $75 million prize pool, runs July 6–August 23 in Paris
  • Tournament marks first Esports World Cup held outside Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Regulatory shift opens esports doors

Previous editions of the Esports World Cup, held in Riyadh, operated without crypto sponsorship due to regulatory restrictions. The move to Paris—the first EWC held outside of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia—coincided with France's updated rules governing digital asset advertising, creating an opening both exchanges seized.

Coinbase, the largest US-based crypto exchange, has been pushing into European markets following MiCA regulatory clarity. The sponsorship extends that strategy into a new vertical. Bitget, a global derivatives-focused platform, already has a strong foothold in Asian and emerging markets; the Paris event signals ambition to deepen Western brand presence.

The scale of EWC 2026

The tournament features a $75 million prize pool across 25 events. The Valorant segment alone features 16 teams competing within the broader structure. Early results show competitive intensity: Nongshim RedForce knocked off Team Vitality 2-1 in the quarterfinals on July 10.

The prize pool size matters. Institutional sponsors—including crypto firms—now see esports as a long-term brand play, not a one-off activation. For Coinbase and Bitget, the visibility at a $75 million tournament justifies the spend as a path into younger, digitally native audiences.
