Cypherpunk's Zcash mining fleet reportedly holds 18% of hashrate, targets 20%
In brief
- Cypherpunk launched a Zcash mining operation on August 18, 2026, calling it the world's largest.
- The fleet came from a $33.33 million equity-based deal with Winklevoss-affiliated entities.
- Output reportedly reached about 4.2 GSol/s, roughly 18% of total Zcash network hashrate.
- Cypherpunk holds 323,394 ZEC and aims to own 5% of total supply.
- Crypto Briefing flagged concentration risk from one public company holding that much hashrate.
How the fleet was acquired
Cypherpunk didn't pay a big cash sum for the machines. The company obtained the fleet through a $33.33 million equity-based acquisition from Winklevoss-affiliated entities, as reported by Crypto Briefing, and the deal included a pre-funded warrant for approximately 43.3 million shares of CYPH (the company's stock ticker) rather than a large cash payment.
That structure matters. Per the report, it let Cypherpunk expand operations without a cash outlay. Kevin Zhang, described as an industry veteran, joined as Head of Mining to lead the initiative after the deal closed, according to the company.
From balance sheet to block rewards
Before the launch, Cypherpunk's Zcash exposure came mainly from accumulating ZEC on its balance sheet. The company holds 323,394 ZEC, roughly 1.92% of circulating supply, per Crypto Briefing. Its stated goal is 5% of total ZEC supply, and mining rewards are meant to help close that gap.
Zcash is a cryptocurrency designed with privacy features. Its network measures computing power in GSol/s (billions of solutions per second), which is the unit behind the 4.2 GSol/s figure. Cypherpunk says the mined Zcash will help fund further investment in privacy-preserving technologies.
"Cypherpunk invests in privacy technologies to support the cypherpunk ethos and American values."
Cypherpunk Technologies said that in a company statement.
The decentralization question
Crypto Briefing raised a concentration concern in its report.
Its analysis noted that a single public company controlling around 18% of hashrate (and aiming for around 20%) is a meaningful share of a network whose appeal rests partly on not depending on any one party. Both the 20% hashrate figure and the 5% supply figure are company targets, not reported results.
