Hong Kong questions HSBC over Singapore AI Centre of Excellence plan
In brief
- Hong Kong questioned HSBC over its Singapore AI hub, Crypto Briefing reported.
- HSBC announced its Global AI Centre of Excellence on July 27, 2026.
- The Singapore centre is expected to create more than 100 new AI specialist roles.
- HSBC called the move a strategic allocation of resources, not a withdrawal from Hong Kong.
What HSBC is building
HSBC isn't pitching this as a local lab. The bank aims to roll out innovations developed in Singapore across its operations worldwide, so whatever gets built there is meant to travel.
The work centres on three areas: wealth management client interactions, treasury solutions for corporate customers and AI-enabled digital payments.
There's a hiring push alongside it, too. HSBC also plans to hire approximately 100 wealth relationship managers in Singapore over the next two years, which brings the two plans to more than 200 new positions tied to AI and wealth expansion in the region.
Why Hong Kong is asking
Crypto Briefing's report doesn't identify which Hong Kong body, official or group raised the questions with HSBC. The sensitivity isn't hard to see, though. HSBC was founded in Hong Kong in 1865, and Singapore is described as the bank's fifth-largest market outside Hong Kong (a sizeable footprint, but still secondary to its home city).
The bank says it isn't leaving Hong Kong.
HSBC described the Singapore move as a strategic allocation of resources rather than a withdrawal from Hong Kong. Why Singapore, then? According to the bank's positioning, the city's appeal comes down to an established talent ecosystem.
Part of a wider AI strategy
The Singapore CoE doesn't stand alone. It fits into a wider HSBC strategy that includes appointing David Rice as Chief AI Officer and earlier investments in a Quantum CoE.
Hong Kong isn't cut out of that picture entirely, either. HSBC is also participating in the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's GenAI Sandbox, so the bank's AI work is still tied to its home regulator even as the new centre takes shape in Singapore.
