IonQ Unveils Superion Roadmap and SkyWater Foundry Strategy

Superion and the Path to 10,000 Qubits

The Superion 256 is a 256-qubit platform built on IonQ's trapped-ion architecture, which uses individual atoms suspended by electromagnetic fields as the basic units of computation. Customer deliveries are slated to begin in 2027, with orders already being accepted.

IonQ is also developing the Superion 10K, targeting approximately 10,000 physical qubits with commercial availability planned for 2028. The roadmap reflects the company's ambition to scale beyond near-term quantum advantage into systems capable of solving real-world problems across optimization, drug discovery, and materials science.

Trapped-ion systems have long been considered a leading architecture for quantum computing. They offer advantages in coherence time and gate fidelity compared to some competing approaches. Google demonstrated its Willow chip in late 2024, showing quantum error correction improvements as system size increased, signaling that the field is moving toward systems that can correct their own errors at scale.

Vertical Integration Through SkyWater

IonQ closed its acquisition of SkyWater Technology on July 31, 2026, in a deal valued at approximately $1.8 billion. SkyWater operates domestic semiconductor fabrication facilities in the US, giving IonQ direct control over chip manufacturing.

The strategic value is clear. Owning fabrication capacity lets IonQ iterate on its quantum chip designs without relying on third-party fabs, accelerating development cycles. More importantly, IonQ launched SkyWater Quantum Solutions, a merchant foundry service designed to fabricate chips for quantum companies. This opens a new revenue stream by selling foundry services to competitors and startups in the quantum space.

IonQ noted that six tape-outs were completed during the first half of 2026, demonstrating active iteration on chip designs. The foundry service signals confidence in IonQ's manufacturing pipeline.

Revenue Guidance Raised Sharply

IonQ raised its 2026 revenue guidance to between $450 million and $460 million, a massive leap from a prior projection of roughly $285 million. The increase reflects both strong near-term demand for existing quantum systems and confidence in SkyWater's contribution to the business.

The company also disclosed an $8.18 million quantum security agreement with Congruity360, underscoring growing enterprise interest in quantum-resistant cryptography as quantum systems mature.

IonQ's strategy—combining hardware innovation, vertical integration, and a foundry business model—positions it as both a quantum systems vendor and infrastructure provider. Whether the market validates these ambitions at scale remains to be seen, but the roadmap signals serious engineering and commercial momentum.
