Kalshi explores IPO as annualized revenue triples to $2 billion
In brief
- Kalshi raised $1 billion at $22 billion valuation in Coatue-led round
- Annualized revenue tripled to over $2 billion since November
- Executives held early IPO discussions with investment banks
- Institutional trading volume jumped 800% in six months
- Public listing likely at least one year away
Revenue surge and institutional momentum
Kalshi raised $1 billion at a $22 billion valuation in a funding round led by Coatue last month, with backing from Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, IVP, Paradigm, Morgan Stanley, and ARK Invest. The capital influx reflects investor confidence in the company's ability to scale institutional trading.
The timing of these IPO discussions aligns with a dramatic acceleration in Kalshi's business metrics. Institutional trading volume jumped 800% in the six months ending in early May, while annualized trading volume increased from $52 billion to $178 billion. A wave of NBA and World Cup betting boosted trading volume, signaling strong retail and institutional appetite for prediction markets.
IPO path and institutional strategy
As part of the IPO discussions, Kalshi is asking prospective advisers to integrate with its platform, giving banks' institutional clients access to trade on it. This approach ties the banks' commercial interests directly to Kalshi's growth—a strategic move to align advisers with the company's expansion.
Kalshi said it would deploy capital towards institutional growth, including new products for hedge funds, asset managers, insurers, and trading firms. The focus on institutional clients reflects a shift away from retail-only trading toward a more diversified customer base.
Any public listing is still likely at least a year away, with late next year or 2028 the expected timeframe. These early talks are exploratory—a signal that Kalshi's leadership sees a public market opportunity, but the path remains fluid. The company's rapid revenue growth and institutional traction suggest the market may be receptive when the time comes.
