Momenta launches Hong Kong IPO targeting $751M for autonomous driving
In brief
- Momenta priced Hong Kong IPO at HK$295.60 per share, with trading beginning July 8.
- HK$5.89 billion ($751M) raised targets autonomous driving R&D and Robotaxi expansion.
- Cornerstone investors include Mercedes-Benz, BlackRock, and GIC.
Capital allocation and strategy
Momenta plans to funnel 60% of IPO proceeds into research and development. Another 20% is earmarked for accelerating its Robotaxi services. The remaining capital will support working capital and general operations as the company scales its autonomous vehicle ecosystem.
Cornerstone investors include Mercedes-Benz, BlackRock, Boyu Capital, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC, and Fidelity International. This lineup signals confidence from both automotive incumbents and institutional asset managers in Momenta's technical roadmap.
Scale and financial trajectory
Founded in 2016 by Cao Xudong, a former Microsoft researcher, Momenta develops advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Its client list includes Toyota and Audi among major automotive players adopting its technology.
By the end of 2025, Momenta's software was running in over 680,000 vehicles. The deployment scale underscores how quickly the company has embedded itself in global supply chains.
On the financial front, revenue hit 2.41 billion yuan (about $339 million) for fiscal year 2025, representing 82% year-over-year growth. Yet the company's net loss widened to 3.46 billion yuan ($509 million) over the same period. This dynamic—rapid top-line expansion paired with deepening losses—is typical of autonomous driving firms pouring capital into R&D before reaching profitability.
Market positioning
Momenta reached unicorn status back in 2018, crossing the $1 billion valuation threshold just two years after its founding. The IPO represents a natural next step for a company that's already embedded in production vehicles and has secured major OEM partnerships. With $751 million in fresh capital and a clear roadmap—60% to R&D, 20% to Robotaxi—Momenta is positioned to compete in an increasingly crowded autonomous driving landscape.
