In brief

  • Morphotonics raised €40M from 3M Ventures, Innovation Industries, BOM, and Invest-NL
  • Nanoimprint lithography technology stamps microscopic optical structures onto large substrates
  • Funding expands data center optics capacity amid AI infrastructure demand growth
  • Netherlands firm operates with 50–60 employees and achieved 3–4x revenue growth in 2025

The technology and market

Morphotonics specializes in nanoimprint lithography, a process that stamps microscopic structures onto substrates as large as 1.1 by 1.3 meters. The company's roll-to-plate system produces optical components—lenses, prisms, waveguides—that manipulate light at the nanoscale. These components find use in display optics, augmented reality waveguides, and optical interconnects for data centers.

The capital will fund Morphotonics' push into data center optics, a market expanding alongside AI infrastructure demands. The company also targets advanced semiconductor packaging, where precision optical components are becoming critical.

Momentum and leadership

Hugo da Silva took over as CEO in October 2024, and under his leadership, Morphotonics reported revenue growth of three to four times year-over-year in 2025. The €40M round builds on a Series B first closing in September 2024, which brought in over $10M (roughly €9M) from 3M Ventures, Innovation Industries, and BOM.

Operating out of Veldhoven—the same Dutch city where ASML manufactures chip machines—Morphotonics now employs roughly 50 to 60 people. The company has opened an office in China and established a contract manufacturing network, signaling its push for international scale.

Strategic positioning

With 3M Ventures on the cap table, the company gains a strategic partner with deep expertise in materials science and manufacturing at scale. Invest-NL's participation adds a sovereign investment dimension—the Dutch state-backed fund has been selectively deploying capital into companies considered strategically important for Europe's tech independence, particularly in semiconductors and photonics.

Morphotonics' partnership with Leia, a company focused on 3D display technology, provides a commercial anchor in the consumer electronics space. This foothold, combined with new capital, positions the company to scale manufacturing and deepen its presence in optical components critical to next-generation data center and semiconductor infrastructure.
