NEAR Protocol Spot Volume Drops 36% in 24 Hours
In brief
- NEAR spot volume fell 36% to $39 million; futures volume held at $302 million.
- Binance, OKX, Bybit, and KuCoin reported spot declines of 30-57% in 24 hours.
- NEAR trading near $1.89, below 50-day MA but above 200-day support.
- Long/short ratios favor bulls despite lower spot demand and waning activity.
- Resistance at $2.00; deeper retracement risk if 200-day MA support breaks.
Volume Collapse Across Major Venues
Spot trading volume for NEAR decreased to approximately $39 million according to CoinGlass data, marking a sharp reversal. Spot volume on Binance, the biggest market for NEAR, has decreased by more than 30% over the last 24 hours. The damage spread across the ecosystem: OKX and Bybit reported spot volume drops of more than 38%, while KuCoin experienced a spot volume decline of almost 57%.
The retreat fits a pattern. NEAR has been trading sideways for several weeks and is having difficulty gaining new momentum. This stagnation follows the explosive rally that propelled NEAR above $3 earlier this year, leaving traders uncertain about the next leg.
Derivatives Still Bullish, Spot Demand Fades
Yet derivatives markets tell a different story. Futures volume is still significantly higher at about $302 million. More importantly, despite lower spot demand, derivatives positioning remains generally positive. Major exchanges' long/short ratios are still favoring bulls, and the top traders on Binance continue to hold more long than short positions.
The divergence is notable. Liquidation data indicates that long positions accounted for the majority of forced closures over the last 24 hours, suggesting some friction in the bullish thesis, yet the overall positioning hasn't flipped.
Technical Setup: Consolidation Zone
The asset is trading close to $1.89, which is just above its 200-day moving average. The price is still below the 50-day moving average, but it is still above longer-term support. The Relative Strength Index is at about 48, indicating balanced market conditions.
The psychological $2 level, where the 50-day moving average likewise converges, continues to be the immediate resistance. Bullish momentum could be revived and sidelined capital could be drawn back into the market with a strong move above that level. On the downside, NEAR may be exposed to a deeper retracement towards the $1.70-$1.75 range if support around the 200-day moving average is lost.
"As of right now, the decline in trading volume appears to be more indicative of waning speculative activity than of outright panic selling."
The narrative is one of fatigue, not fear. In line with the general decline in trading activity, volume has also decreased throughout July, a seasonal pattern that may lift as summer trading doldrums ease. NEAR's consolidation, while frustrating to momentum traders, preserves the long/short balance and leaves room for a decisive move in either direction once volume returns.
