In brief

  • OpenAI acquired InstantDB's team, a real-time database platform announced August 22
  • InstantDB served 17,000 users, powered 400,000 applications, processed 2.5 billion transactions
  • Instant Cloud phased out; open-source codebase remains available for self-hosting
  • Cloud-hosted applications run until August 31, 2027; refunds available for subscribers

The acquisition and InstantDB's journey

InstantDB started as an idea in 2021 and went through Y Combinator in 2022. The platform offered developers a Backend-as-a-Service product, handling real-time data synchronization. Over its lifetime, the platform processed roughly 2.5 billion transactions.

The acquisition brings InstantDB's real-time database expertise into OpenAI as the company focuses on developer tooling for AI agents. Real-time data management is critical infrastructure for AI applications that need to maintain state across multiple operations.

"AI agents need persistent state management. An agent that books your flights, monitors your portfolio, or manages your calendar has to read and write data in real time, handle concurrent operations, and resolve conflicts when multiple processes touch the same information simultaneously." — InstantDB team

Transition timeline and open-source future

Instant Cloud is being phased out. New signups have already been halted, and existing subscribers can claim refunds for billing after July 31, 2026. Cloud-hosted applications will continue running until August 31, 2027.

The InstantDB open-source codebase will remain available for self-hosting, ensuring developers can continue using the platform independently. This approach lets OpenAI integrate the team's expertise while preserving community access to the underlying technology.
