The gap between adoption and education
Students are using AI tools at scale. Yet schools aren't keeping pace with formal instruction. A staggering 84% of students report using AI tools, yet only 16% of high-school leaders say all their students receive any formal education on how AI actually works. This mismatch drives the partnership's urgency.
CodeAI, formerly known as Code.org, rebranded on June 2, 2026, to expand its mission well beyond computer science education. The nonprofit has already reached over 150 million students across 190 countries and now positions AI instruction as central to its work.
What the partnership delivers
CodeAI offers free curricula including AI Foundations and the Hour of AI. The AI Foundations course covers the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence alongside the technical ones, ensuring students think critically about both capability and consequence.
OpenAI has been deploying AI tools across hundreds of colleges and K-12 districts, including Houston ISD and UT Austin. The company also launched the OpenAI Student Collective, a program that places campus leads at universities to evangelize responsible AI use.
Building educator capacity
Scale requires training the trainers. OpenAI became a founding partner of the National Academy for AI Instruction, a five-year initiative aiming to train roughly 400,000 US K-12 educators in AI skills. This systemic approach—equipping teachers before asking them to teach—addresses a structural bottleneck in AI education rollout.
