In brief

  • Ripple received preliminary CASP license approval from Luxembourg's CSSF financial regulator Tuesday.
  • License approval remains subject to final administrative conditions before full finalization.
  • Ripple can offer regulated crypto and stablecoin services across 30 EEA member states under MiCA.

Expanding European Footprint

Ripple already holds an existing Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license in the region. Combining the CASP and EMI licenses will enable European commercial banks, fintech firms, and corporations to use Ripple's payment solutions through a single regulated integration. The company now employs around 200 people across its European operations, with offices in Luxembourg, Iceland, Ireland, and an engineering hub in Geneva. Ripple's second-largest global office is located in London.

Institutional Adoption Path

The dual licensing framework removes friction for financial institutions seeking to adopt crypto-native payments infrastructure. Banks and fintechs can now integrate Ripple's solutions without navigating separate regulatory pathways. This matters because MiCA compliance was a major hurdle for crypto firms operating in Europe. The CASP designation signals that Luxembourg's regulator views Ripple's infrastructure as meeting the bloc's highest standards for asset custody, trading, and settlement.

"Once fully approved, European banks, FIs, and fintechs will be able to access our end-to-end cryptoasset and stablecoin payments infrastructure through a single regulated integration. The next wave of institutional digital asset adoption in Europe is here!" — Cassie Craddock, Ripple's Managing Director for the UK and Europe
