In brief
- Vlad Tenev's X account was hacked to promote fake memecoin $VLAD
- Deleted post falsely claimed token would list in Robinhood app
- Robinhood blockchain attracted $700M in assets and 300K+ daily active addresses
- Hack occurred amid wave of speculative memecoins on the chain
Account Compromised, Post Removed
Vlad Tenev's X account was compromised on Thursday and used to promote the fake memecoin. Robinhood later confirmed the account had been hacked. The post included a blockchain wallet address and described the token as part of the company's focus on Robinhood Chain. Robinhood's communications team said they were working with X to restore access.
"Our CEO Vlad Tenev's X account was compromised and posted a fake promotion for a meme coin. We're working with X to restore access and the post has been removed," Robinhood said in a statement on X.
Blockchain Becomes Memecoin Magnet
The incident came as Robinhood's newly launched blockchain has become a hotbed of speculative trading. The network has attracted more than $700 million in assets across stablecoins, tokenized stocks and memecoins. The blockchain has also surpassed 300,000 daily active addresses and processed roughly 10 million transactions in a single day.
The rapid growth in activity has fueled a wave of new memecoins attempting to capitalize on the chain's rising popularity. Hackers saw an opportunity in this frenzy. The $VLAD promotion specifically exploited the perception that anything tied to Robinhood carries legitimacy, a tactic that's become common as blockchain networks attract retail speculation.
