Solana DEX volume surges past $17B weekly, outpacing major exchanges

In brief

  • Solana's weekly DEX volume exceeded $17B in mid-September, with daily volumes ranging $1.6B–$3.25B
  • Network processes more DEX volume than any other blockchain, frequently outpacing Coinbase and Kraken
  • Stablecoin swaps, memecoin transactions, and perpetual contracts drive activity; Jupiter dominates liquidity
  • Solana hosts 90% of global PropAMM activity, creating concentrated but potentially vulnerable market position

Volume dominance reshapes DEX hierarchy

Solana's trading activity has grown at a pace that's reshaping the broader DeFi landscape. The network crossed $3T in cumulative DEX volume in early September, with over half of that total generated within the preceding year. Over the past 30 days alone, cumulative volume surpassed $76B.

The scale of this activity dwarfs traditional benchmarks. On September 12, Solana's daily DEX volume peaked at $3.25B, a level that exceeds the daily trading volume of several mid-tier centralized exchanges combined. Solana's DEX volumes now frequently outpace those of major centralized exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken.

Three categories fuel the surge

Three main categories are driving Solana DEX volume: stablecoin swaps, meme-driven transactions, and perpetual contracts. Memecoin speculation has become particularly significant — Raydium processed over 90% of Solana's memestocks DEX volume. Tokenized equities represent another emerging category. Cumulative tokenized stock trading on Solana topped $5B by late September.

A new market structure is also emerging. PropAMMs now capture between 15% and 30% of global DEX volume, and Solana hosts approximately 90% of global PropAMM activity. Jupiter, the dominant liquidity aggregator on Solana, facilitates a majority of SOL-stablecoin flows through these PropAMMs.

Concentration and growth

Solana's dominance carries both strategic advantage and risk. The fact that 90% of PropAMM activity lives on one chain is both a competitive advantage and a potential vulnerability. Yet the broader DEX ecosystem on Solana is diversifying. Traditional AMMs are regaining market share alongside PropAMMs, suggesting the pie is growing fast enough that competition strengthens rather than fragments the network.

Alongside established names like Raydium and Orca, newer platforms like PumpSwap have emerged to compete for trading volume. DeFi total value locked on Solana sits between $5.72B and $6.2B as of mid-to-late September. The network also recently recorded all-time highs in both transaction count and dApp revenue.
