SpaceX signs multiyear Qualcomm deal to build Starlink Mobile ground network
In brief
- SpaceX signed a multiyear deal with Qualcomm for Starlink Mobile core network technology.
- Qualcomm's Dragonwing QRU100 and QDU100 units will form Starlink Mobile's ground base stations.
- Starlink Mobile deployment is expected to start in 2027 across tens of thousands of US sites.
- Neither company disclosed financial terms of the contract.
What Qualcomm is supplying
The deal centers on Qualcomm's Dragonwing platforms, per the announcement. There are two pieces of hardware. The QRU100 is a radio unit and the QDU100 is a distributed unit, and together they form the base stations Starlink Mobile plans to deploy on the ground.
Those base stations will use Massive MIMO in a 64T64R configuration (that's 64 transmit and 64 receive paths per site). Deployment is expected to start in 2027 and cover tens of thousands of sites across the US.
Qualcomm said on Wednesday that the terrestrial network it will help build is meant to “complement Starlink’s satellite capabilities.”
Neither company disclosed what any of it costs.
Spectrum and satellites
Crypto Briefing's report points to two related moves on SpaceX's side. In October 2026, SpaceX acquired low-band 800 MHz spectrum from Grain Management for around $8 billion, though that transaction is still pending approval from the Federal Communications Commission.
In orbit, the FCC has granted SpaceX authorization to launch an additional 15,000 next-generation V2 satellites, which are meant to deliver higher-bandwidth connectivity from space, according to the same report. The stated goal is a hybrid network where satellites and terrestrial sites work together to provide coverage.
What it means for Qualcomm
Crypto Briefing framed Starlink Mobile as Elon Musk's bid to compete with Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. For Qualcomm, the outlet said, the contract adds a high-profile infrastructure customer at a time when the chipmaker is pushing its Dragonwing brand into network equipment.
How much it's worth is another question. With the terms undisclosed, investors are left guessing about how material the contract is to Qualcomm's revenue, according to the report.
