The scale of climate risk

Weather-related disasters caused a global economic loss of over $2 trillion in the past decade. Since the 1980s, the number of registered weather-related loss events tripled and inflation-adjusted losses increased fivefold. These trends show no sign of reversing.

Yet the financial markets built to absorb this risk remain inaccessible to those who need it most. The weather derivatives market has a notional value of roughly $25 billion—a rounding error compared to broader derivatives markets. Energy utilities firms account for about 40 percent of all weather derivatives contracts, followed by agriculture at 25 percent, concentrating hedging tools among the largest players.

Why the market fails Main Street

The current weather derivatives market is fragmented, bespoke, and riddled with limited contract standardization, weak pricing transparency, and significant counterparty risk. This structure works for institutional players negotiating bespoke deals. It fails everyone else.

Smallholder farmers, small logistics operators, and micro-businesses in climate-vulnerable emerging markets lack access to weather derivatives instruments. The barriers aren't just cost—they're structural. Weather derivatives are highly specific, mostly bespoke contracts based on localized risks and frequently short term, which curtails secondary trading activity. A smallholder in Kenya can't buy a standardized drought hedge for the next growing season because no such product exists at scale.

Tokenization as the unlock

Omkar Godbole, co-managing editor of CoinDesk Markets, spent years on a currencies and commodities research desk tracking natural gas prices and weather derivatives. His experience convinced him that blockchain could solve what traditional finance couldn't.

A tokenized weather derivative becomes tradable like any other crypto asset—accessible to anyone with a wallet, priced transparently on-chain, and settled without intermediaries.

The result isn't just financial inclusion. It's the reallocation of climate risk from those least able to bear it to those best positioned to do so. That's not a use case. That's the entire point.
