Trump claims Russia-Ukraine 'energy ceasefire'; Zelensky says it's news to him
In brief
- Trump posted on Truth Social Sunday that a Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire was effective immediately.
- Zelensky told Axios the announcement was news to him; Ukraine would agree if Russia did.
- Bloomberg's Javier Blas noted this is Trump's second similar announcement, CoinDesk reported.
- Crypto prices were flat, with bitcoin trading just under $83,000, CoinDesk reported.
A ceasefire Kyiv hadn't heard about
Trump's post was short. "Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!" he wrote, according to CoinDesk's report on the announcement.
Zelensky doesn't appear to have been in the loop. Speaking to Axios reporter Barak Ravid, as reported by CoinDesk, he said Ukraine would accept the arrangement on one condition (Russia agreeing to it as well).
“The ceasefire announcement was news for me. But if Russians agree to an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will agree.”
He went a step further. Zelensky said that if Trump negotiated the deal with Putin, Ukraine wanted to be told when it begins, adding that Kyiv was ready to accept it.
For now, the ceasefire is Trump's claim on Truth Social.
Not the first time
This isn't new territory. Bloomberg's Javier Blas, as cited by CoinDesk, noted this was the second time Trump has made a similar announcement.
Markets barely moved
CoinDesk reported that Trump's weekend posts no longer appear to move markets much, and Sunday's post didn't change that. Oil prices weren't moving much on Hyperliquid, while traditional oil trading hadn't opened yet. Crypto was flat too, with bitcoin trading just under $83,000, per CoinDesk.
There's also an election on the calendar. The U.S. midterms are less than one month away, and on Polymarket the odds of a Democratic sweep of both the House and Senate have risen steadily for months, now sitting at 62%, according to CoinDesk.
So is this a real peace deal? CoinDesk wrote that it's unclear whether the announcement is a genuine agreement or an attempt by the president to notch some sort of win before the elections.
