The advisory specifically recommends that Americans still in Iran consider land routes to Armenia or Turkey as safer exit options. For dual nationals, the situation is more complex: Iranian regulations require dual citizens to use their Iranian passports for departure. Additionally, displaying a US passport in Iran can increase the risk of detention.
Pattern of Escalation
This latest alert builds on earlier warnings. Previous advisories were issued on January 13 and February 6, 2026, both of which highlighted massive public protests and internet restrictions affecting movement and communication.
The advisory also stressed the importance of enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which provides security updates and enables the State Department to reach Americans in emergencies.
