In brief

  • NU7 mainnet activation targeted for November 5 following developer consensus
  • Block times reduce from 75 seconds to 25 seconds
  • Testnet launches October 6; mainnet parameters finalized October 20
  • 98.9% of ZEC holders voted to preserve the halving schedule
  • ZEC surged 20% Thursday as privacy coins outperformed

Testnet Launch and Final Decision Timeline

Zcash developer Sean Bowe said the upgrade is scheduled to activate on the testnet on Oct. 6, giving the community and node operators time to assess performance before mainnet deployment. A final decision on the mainnet upgrade and its activation height is scheduled for Oct. 20, after an assessment of testnet results.

The three-week window between testnet and final decision allows developers to gather feedback and validate the upgrade's stability. This phased approach mirrors best practices across other blockchain networks preparing for significant protocol changes.

Technical Scope and Wallet Impact

NU7 will disable version 4 transactions and integrate the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), a mechanism tied to Zcash's economic model. Bowe said NU7 would not introduce new transaction formats and should not significantly affect wallets.

However, full nodes, indexers and block explorers may require adjustments. The shorter block interval will demand infrastructure changes to keep pace with increased block production, though end users shouldn't experience disruption to their transaction experience.

Community Consensus and Market Response

On Wednesday, 98.9% of ZEC holders supported preserving the halving schedule, signaling overwhelming backing for the upgrade's economic parameters. 99.9% of the Zcash (ZEC)-weighted vote supported the faster-block proposal, demonstrating near-unanimous alignment on technical direction.

On Thursday, ZEC rose about 20% over 24 hours as privacy coins substantially outperformed the wider market. The price movement reflected market sentiment around the upgrade's technical improvements and the clarity provided by community voting.
