CME launches sports futures tied to team and athlete performance
In brief
- CME Group partners with FutureSports to launch derivatives tied to team and athlete performance metrics
- Cash-settled contracts feature monthly and quarterly expirations, pending regulatory approval
- Index-based products reference continuous pricing on broader statistical measures, not binary win/loss bets
- Stadium operators, sponsors, insurers, and broadcasters are potential users
How the contracts work
The contracts will be cash settled and offered with monthly and quarterly expiration dates. FutureSports converts official play-by-play statistics into rules-based indexes designed to measure performance across sports played on fields, courts and ice. This approach differs fundamentally from existing binary contracts.
Unlike binary contracts that settle based on whether a team wins or loses, the planned CME products will reference continuously priced indexes based on a broader set of team and athlete statistics. That means traders can gain exposure to specific performance metrics—scoring rates, defensive efficiency, individual player stats—without betting simply on wins and losses.
Who benefits and how governance works
Potential users of the contracts include stadium operators, sponsors, insurers, apparel manufacturers and broadcasting partners whose revenue can be affected by team and athlete performance. A sports apparel maker, for example, could hedge exposure if a star athlete's statistics decline. A broadcaster could offset revenue risk tied to team performance.
FutureSports will independently administer the indexes under published governance and methodology procedures designed to align with international financial benchmark principles. Sports leagues will provide the official data used to calculate the indexes but will not participate in determining index values or governing the methodology. This separation protects against conflicts of interest and maintains the indexes' integrity as financial benchmarks.
The CME-FutureSports model
CME previously partnered with FanDuel to offer event contracts covering sports outcomes, financial benchmarks, commodities, cryptocurrencies and economic indicators. The FutureSports partnership takes a different approach by turning statistical sports performance into benchmark indexes that can support traditional futures and options contracts. This framework lets institutional investors and sophisticated traders access sports performance data through regulated derivatives rather than binary betting products.
