In brief

  • Kalshi is investigating bets on Katie Zacharia placed shortly before her White House press secretary appointment.
  • The Wall Street Journal reported the probe on October 9, the day of the announcement.
  • Three bets totaled under $175 in stakes, with potential payouts above $9,500, per the WSJ.
  • The traders haven't been identified; Kalshi hasn't said whether it will refer the matter to the CFTC.

Three bets, under $175 in stakes

Zacharia was revealed as the appointee through a post on Truth Social. Before that, her odds on Kalshi sat at approximately 1%, according to the Wall Street Journal as reported by Crypto Briefing.

That's a long shot.

The first of the three trades drawing attention was a $19 wager placed late on October 8 that stood to return $1,896, per the WSJ's reporting. The other two came on October 9, just minutes before the announcement. One was a bet of about $74 that could have returned $3,689, and the other was about $80 (with a potential payout of $4,023).

They're small numbers on their own. Added up, the three bets total less than $175 in stakes, while their potential combined payouts top $9,500, according to the same reporting.

Who placed them? It isn't known, and none of the traders has been identified.

What Kalshi has (and hasn't) said

Kalshi framed the probe as part of its broader effort to protect market integrity, Crypto Briefing reported. The platform has previously referred similar matters of possible insider trading to the CFTC, the federal regulator that oversees it, but it hasn't said whether it'll do the same with the Zacharia trades. It also hasn't said whether any payouts have been held back.

A parallel from July

Crypto Briefing pointed to a case from July 2026 as the closest parallel. That month, a CFTC probe focused on Trump's teleprompter operator and trades tied to the content of Trump's speeches, and profits from those trades were frozen, the outlet reported.

For now, the Zacharia bets are under investigation, the traders are unnamed, and Kalshi isn't saying much beyond confirming that it's looking into them.
