In brief

  • Metaplanet plans bitcoin-backed bonds offering 4–6% fixed coupon returns collateralized by Bitcoin
  • Bitbonds initiative launched through Project NOVA, a joint study with JPYC and Progmat
  • No concrete products exist yet; long-term vision includes on-chain settlement with stablecoin
  • Tokyo-listed company holds 43,000 BTC to back proposed bond offering

Bitcoin Collateral and Treasury Holdings

Metaplanet had accumulated 43,000 BTC by early July 2026, built up through a series of strategic acquisitions funded in part by zero-coupon bond issuances. That substantial Bitcoin treasury now forms the collateral base for the proposed Bitbonds. Holders would receive fixed coupon payments backed directly by Bitcoin sitting in Metaplanet's reserves.

The company emphasized that this remains exploratory. Metaplanet has been clear that no concrete products exist yet—this is still a collaborative study, not a product launch. The initiative targets Japanese investors specifically, designed to integrate digital credit products and bonds backed by Bitcoin into the local market.

Securities Acquisition and Market Vision

A critical foundation for this plan was Metaplanet's acquisition of Metaplanet Securities in June 2026, previously known as Siiibo Securities. The brokerage license gave the company the regulatory infrastructure needed to explore fixed-income products. Benchmark analysts have suggested the market is underestimating what Metaplanet Securities could become.

The long-term vision involves moving Bitbonds entirely on-chain with stablecoin settlement. This shift would eliminate much of the friction in traditional fixed-income markets, from settlement delays to intermediary costs. For now, the three partners are studying how to bridge Bitcoin collateral with regulated debt instruments designed for institutional and retail investors in Japan.

The announcement underscores a broader shift: Bitcoin holders exploring ways to generate yield on idle capital without selling their positions. Metaplanet's approach differs from lending protocols by anchoring returns to a regulated, securities-backed structure rather than algorithmic incentives.
