OpenAI Launches Free Banked Reset System for Codex Users
In brief
- OpenAI introduced free banked reset system for Codex subscribers on Plus and Pro plans
- Users can accumulate and deploy rate limit resets on their own schedule
- Limited-time two-week referral program offers bonus resets for inviting up to three friends
- Codex reaches 3 million weekly active users amid competition from GitHub Copilot and Claude
Flexible reset control now live
Instead of resets firing automatically on a predetermined timer, eligible Codex users can now save their resets and use them on their own schedule. The shift addresses a key pain point. From April through June, developers voiced frustration about unpredictable and inflexible reset schedules that didn't align with their workflows.
The feature carries no premium tier. No paid upgrade tiers or premium banking options exist for this feature. It is entirely free for users already subscribed to qualifying ChatGPT plans.
Referral incentive and market position
OpenAI paired the launch with a limited-time referral program. Existing users can earn additional resets by inviting friends to complete their first Codex interaction, with each user able to refer up to three friends over a two-week window. The tactic mirrors common growth strategies in SaaS but applies them to a developer tool facing mounting competition.
Codex has crossed the 3 million weekly active users milestone and continues to scale. Yet the assistant operates in an increasingly crowded space. It competes against GitHub Copilot, Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini Code Assist, and open-source alternatives. The banked reset system positions Codex as more user-centric than competitors with rigid scheduling—a meaningful differentiator in a market where developer experience drives adoption.
The feature contains no token, blockchain integration, or digital asset play. It's a straightforward UX improvement, not a crypto experiment.
