The upgrade lands without latency trade-offs
Solana's block capacity rose 66% with this activation—the single largest throughput expansion the network has made in recent memory. The key detail: Solana did not trade latency for throughput here. Slot times remain at 400 milliseconds. The writable account compute unit cap stays at 12 million CUs, and the maximum block data size delta holds at 100 MB.
The upgrade was authored by Lucas Bruder of Jito Labs and first proposed publicly on GitHub in May 2025. It's the second major compute limit expansion in roughly a year. SIMD-0256 raised the compute limit from 50 million to 60 million in July 2025, setting the stage for this latest jump.
Why the network needed more room
Approximately 11% of blocks were already approaching the previous 60 million CU ceiling during peak demand periods. That ceiling was becoming a bottleneck for the most intensive use cases. The new 100 million CU limit creates breathing room for DeFi protocols, payment processors, and other high-throughput applications without forcing validators to choose between capacity and speed.
Early results and validator adoption
Early network observations following activation reported improved throughput for high-volume use cases, specifically DeFi and payments, with no immediate technical issues. Network health metrics have remained stable since the activation.
Validator infrastructure improvements support this expansion. Over 70% of Solana validators have adopted XDP networking, a low-level packet processing framework that reduces networking overhead significantly. That widespread adoption of XDP means the network is better equipped to handle the increased compute load without degradation in block propagation times.
