XRP's Coinbase discount nearly vanishes after converting Binance USDT prices

In brief

  • XRP's raw Coinbase discount at the Nov. 2 close was about 0.168%, per CryptoSlate.
  • Converting Binance's USDT quote into dollars cut that gap to 0.006%.
  • CryptoQuant contributor Arab Chain had flagged a -0.16% premium reading as an eight-month low.
  • Adjusted discounts of 0.066% and 0.078% remained on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31.
  • CryptoSlate's analysis isn't an executable arbitrage test and doesn't reproduce CryptoQuant's index.

What the premium index showed

CryptoQuant contributor Arab Chain reported an XRP Coinbase Premium Index reading of roughly -0.16% on Nov. 2, calling it an eight-month low and reading it as relatively weaker demand on Coinbase. The same post cautioned that the index on its own wasn't definitive evidence of continued downside pressure.

That caveat turned out to matter.

The dollar adjustment

Coinbase quotes XRP in dollars. Binance quotes it in USDT, and USDT wasn't trading at exactly $1. The completed Nov. 2 candles put Coinbase XRP/USD at $1.2481, Binance XRP/USDT at 1.2502 USDT and Coinbase USDT/USD at $0.99838.

CryptoSlate's method multiplies Binance's XRP price by USDT's dollar price, then compares Coinbase against that converted figure. On that basis, the raw -0.168% gap became -0.006% (close to zero). The reference is Coinbase's own USDT/USD market, which is a venue price rather than a universal redemption rate, and it doesn't tell you why USDT traded below a dollar.

The fix didn't erase the discount every day, though. Across seven completed UTC daily observations, the adjustment narrowed the gap each time but left adjusted discounts of about 0.066% on Oct. 30 and 0.078% on Oct. 31 (when the raw figure was -0.200%). A separate check of 60 matched one-minute buckets from 12:00 to 12:59 UTC on Nov. 2 found a median raw gap of about -0.128% and a median dollar-adjusted gap of roughly +0.006%.

What the analysis doesn't prove

The measurement stops short of an executable arbitrage test.

CryptoSlate's calculation doesn't reproduce CryptoQuant's proprietary index, and it doesn't identify who was on the selling side. Closing trades are asynchronous, so they aren't executable quotes either. The analysis said a relative-demand warning would be more persuasive if a discount persisted after currency conversion alongside heavier seller-initiated XRP trading over equivalent windows.

It's not the first time this disconnect has shown up. An August 2025 XRP liquidity study found prices closely aligned across Binance and Coinbase even as trading activity was concentrated in different quote currencies.

XRP traded near $1.28 on Nov. 3. Around 13:15 UTC, Coinbase's ticker reported a $1.276 last trade, while Binance's rolling ticker showed 1.2780 USDT.

Frequently asked questions

Why did XRP look cheaper on Coinbase than on Binance on Nov. 2?

Coinbase quotes XRP in dollars, while Binance quotes it in USDT. A CryptoSlate analysis found the raw Coinbase discount at the Nov. 2 close was about 0.168%. Once Binance's USDT price was converted into dollars using Coinbase's USDT/USD market, the gap shrank to 0.006%.

Does the dollar adjustment prove there was no weak demand for XRP on Coinbase?

No. The adjustment narrowed the discount on all seven daily observations but didn't eliminate it every day, with adjusted discounts of about 0.066% and 0.078% on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31. The analysis doesn't reproduce CryptoQuant's proprietary index, doesn't identify sellers and isn't an executable arbitrage test.
