Zcash Rebounds 30% After Critical Bug Fix, No Exploitation Found
In brief
- Zcash fell 48% to $250 Friday, rebounded 30% to $401 by Saturday
- Critical Orchard soundness vulnerability undetected since May 2022 could enable unlimited counterfeit ZEC
- Developers deployed emergency soft fork June 1; no exploitation evidence confirmed
- Short squeeze from traders covering bearish positions likely drove recovery
The Vulnerability
A soundness vulnerability was discovered on May 29 by Taylor Hornby, an independent security researcher conducting a protocol audit on behalf of Shielded Labs. The flaw resided in Zcash's Orchard privacy pool, which had remained undetected since May 2022. In theory, the bug could have enabled an attacker to mint unlimited, undetectable counterfeit ZEC—a critical threat to the token's integrity.
The discovery triggered a sharp sell-off. Zcash fell to a low of $250 on early Friday after a 48% drop, having traded at a high of $645 just the day before. The sudden crash reflected market panic over the severity of the issue and uncertainty about its real-world impact.
The Fix and Recovery
The Zcash ecosystem launched an emergency fix on June 1 via a coordinated soft fork activation across the network. This represents the second security-driven protocol upgrade in Zcash history since its launch in 2016.
Critically, Zcash developers maintain that there was no evidence that the vulnerability was exploited. On June 3, Zcash Open Development Lab reported the Orchard vulnerability had been successfully remediated.
The token bounced hard. Zcash rebounded as much as 30% as ZEC price rose to a high of $401 early Saturday. At the time of writing, Zcash was up 21% in the last 24 hours to $369.
What Drove the Rebound
Analysts attribute the recovery partly to technical factors. The move might be a "short squeeze" as traders expecting ZEC price to drop further sought cover, pushing prices higher as they closed losing positions.
Notable crypto participants, including Dragonfly's Haseeb Qureshi and Grayscale Founder Barry Silbert, highlighted confusion about the recently patched Zcash bug. The rebound also reflects relief that the ecosystem moved decisively to patch the flaw and that no actual theft or exploitation occurred.
