In brief

  • Lisa Su said AMD's largest customers are asking about chips that won't exist for years.
  • MI500 is due in 2027 and MI600 in 2028, Crypto Briefing reported.
  • Customer talks are dialogs, not signed commitments, Su said.
  • Meta was characterised by Crypto Briefing as an integral partner in custom Instinct GPU deployment.

What's on AMD's roadmap

The near-term piece is the MI400 series, built on the CDNA 5 architecture. AMD's roadmap, as reported by Crypto Briefing, had it shipping in volume by 2026.

The MI500 comes next. Crypto Briefing reported it's scheduled for a 2027 launch, built on the CDNA 6 architecture with a 2nm manufacturing process and paired with HBM4E memory. The MI600 series follows in 2028. Per the same report, AMD is targeting more than 2,000 times higher inference throughput than the MI300X within four years (that's a stated target, not a delivered result).

AMD also plans annual releases of new Helios rack-scale AI platforms through at least 2030, according to the outlet. Each Helios system integrates Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs and Pensando networking into one package.

“We’re in very active dialogs with our largest customers on MI500 and MI600 and beyond.” – Lisa Su, CEO, AMD

Meta's role, per the report

Crypto Briefing described Meta as an integral partner in custom Instinct GPU deployment. The outlet said Meta has begun deploying Helios systems and has contributed to the development of AMD's latest GPUs. It also said Meta has deployed millions of AMD's EPYC processors.

The same report put AMD's Q1 2026 AI-related revenue at $5.8 billion, a 57% year-over-year increase, with MI300-series accelerators making up approximately 73% of that total, according to Crypto Briefing.

Dialogs aren't orders

So what's actually been agreed? Based on Su's own wording, it's talks.

That distinction matters because the roadmap leans on technology that isn't standard yet. Crypto Briefing noted the MI500 depends on a 2nm process and HBM4E memory, both advanced technologies, and that any delay would ripple through every customer's build-out plans. The customers asking about chips years out are the same ones who'd feel a slip in that schedule first.

Frequently asked questions

When are AMD's MI500 and MI600 chips expected?

According to AMD's roadmap as reported by Crypto Briefing, the MI500 series is scheduled for a 2027 launch and the MI600 series is expected in 2028. The MI400 series, built on CDNA 5, was slated to ship in volume by 2026.

Have AMD's customers committed to buying the MI500 or MI600?

No commitments were reported. Lisa Su described the talks with AMD's largest customers as dialogs, not signed commitments, according to Crypto Briefing.

What technology does the AMD MI500 use?

Crypto Briefing reported the MI500 is built on the CDNA 6 architecture, uses a 2nm manufacturing process and pairs with HBM4E memory. The outlet noted any delay in those technologies would affect customers' build-out plans.
