  • Q3 inflows reversed about $5 billion in net outflows from the second quarter.

A quarter that flipped the script

The Q3 haul reversed about $5 billion in net outflows that the funds logged in the second quarter. That's a full swing in a single quarter, and the monthly numbers show how lopsided it was.

July brought in just $172 million. August jumped to $3.52 billion, and September closed at $2.65 billion in net inflows (down around 25% from August), according to SoSoValue data cited by Cointelegraph.

The month didn't finish strong, though. Bitcoin ETFs saw roughly $149 million in net outflows on Wednesday, ending a nine-day inflow streak that had pulled in about $3.1 billion.

Price action alongside the flows

Bitcoin gained 42.71% in the third quarter, according to CoinGlass data reported by Cointelegraph. It's BTC's strongest quarterly gain since Q4 2024 and its best third-quarter run since 2017.

So did the ETF money drive the move? The data published so far doesn't say that, and we're not going to read it in.

The inflows and the price gain happened in the same quarter (that's as far as the numbers go).

Ether and altcoin funds

Ether did better than Bitcoin on price. ETH gained about 71% during the quarter, according to Cointelegraph's report, while US spot Ether ETFs attracted about $3.05 billion in Q3 after roughly $714 million in net outflows in Q2.

XRP ETFs took in $308 million over the quarter, lifting cumulative net inflows to $1.79 billion. Solana and Zcash funds also posted net inflows in September ($272 million and $246 million, respectively), per SoSoValue figures cited by Cointelegraph.

Bitcoin and Ether funds both saw net outflows in Q2. For both of them, Q3 was a sharp turnaround.
