Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Index Hits 90-Day Record Negative Streak
In brief
- Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Index extended negative streak to 90 consecutive days from May 19 through August 16
- Latest reading stands at -0.1066%, surpassing previous 40-day negative streak from January-February
- Negative reading indicates Bitcoin trading at discount on Coinbase relative to Binance
What the Index Measures
The Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Index tracks relative pricing between the two exchanges. A negative reading means that Bitcoin is trading at a discount on Coinbase relative to Binance (and vice versa). The metric captures market microstructure and liquidity differences but doesn't directly measure institutional flows alone.
The Record Streak
This 90-day run is the longest period of consecutive negative readings since the indicator was introduced. The previous record was a 40-day negative streak recorded between January 16 and February 24.
The deterioration accelerated around late July. On July 26, the premium was already deeply negative, at roughly -0.08% to -0.10%. Things started to rapidly deteriorate around July 30 and July 31, with the premium moving sharply lower to -0.14% to -0.15% at its weakest points.
A brief recovery followed. The picture improved temporarily between August 4 and August 10, with the index climbing toward and above the zero line, reaching approximately 0.08%–0.11% around August 7–10. But the bounce didn't last. Around August 10, the index fell rapidly from levels above 0.10% toward zero and then into negative territory.
What It Doesn't Mean
Still, a negative Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Index should not be treated as definitive evidence of institutional Bitcoin outflows. Beyond institutional demand, the indicator can be affected by market structure, liquidity, arbitrage as well as various other factors.
Bitcoin was hovering around the $63,000 level at the time of reporting.
