Ripple engineering director says 'big plans' for XRP Ledger performance in 2027
In brief
- Viijay Khanna, Ripple's engineering director, cited big plans for XRPL performance improvements in 2027, per U.Today.
- Khanna's remark came as critics compared XRPL's roughly 1,500 TPS with Visa's average daily load.
- xrpld 3.3.0 cut node RAM usage by 13-23% this month, U.Today said.
- The XRPL network received a fixCleanup package on November 4, U.Today reported.
Critics, throughput and a two-layer design
Khanna's comment landed in the middle of a debate over the blockchain's speed. Critics set XRPL's roughly 1,500 TPS against Visa's average daily load, and some called the ledger "an outdated copy of legacy payment systems," the outlet reported.
"We have big plans for performance improvements lined up for 2027", said Khanna
U.Today described Ripple's engineering approach as a split between layers. Retail micro-transactions go to second-layer solutions like Dassie (Interledger), while the main layer handles large funds for banks and institutions. It's a different job description for the base chain, and it's the outlet's account of the design (not a spec sheet from Ripple).
A memory fix for node operators
Some of the work has already shipped, according to the report. The xrpld 3.3.0 release this month cut node RAM usage by 13% to 23%, U.Today said. The outlet attributed the memory problem to the system's allocator (which held on to server resources after the cache was emptied) rather than to simple code flaws.
U.Today said the fix let validators substantially reduce infrastructure costs.
The network also got a fixCleanup package on November 4, per the same report. That's two maintenance updates inside a single month.
What U.Today says is coming
According to U.Today, Ripple president Monica Long previously announced a plan to route a large share of the company's client payments directly on the XRP Ledger. The outlet said cross-border remittances would be tied to new lending infrastructure too, and that the XRP Ledger Foundation has already presented a 2027 roadmap.
U.Today reported that Ripple ecosystem builders are rewriting the ledger's foundations, using AI teams for testing and code optimization. Its broader read is that the XRP Ledger is being prepared for a time when RLUSD stablecoin transactions, tokenized stock trading and interbank lending become routine. Those are the outlet's characterizations, and they don't come with a primary source in the report.
