In brief

  • Treasury selects State Street, BlackRock, Vanguard as approved ETF providers for Trump Accounts
  • Program launches July 4 with $1,000 seed contribution for eligible children born 2025–2028
  • State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF set as default investment; crypto explicitly banned
  • BlackRock and other firms matching government contributions for employees' children

Program structure and default investment

The program provides a $1,000 Treasury-funded investment account for every child born between 2025 and 2028 with a valid Social Security number. At launch, all contributions will automatically be invested in the State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF (SPYM), giving the program a broad-market, low-cost foundation.

Parents and guardians will have flexibility to choose from a curated menu of alternatives. Additional approved investment options include BlackRock's IVV and ITOT, State Street's SPTM, and Vanguard's VTI. Each option tracks major equity indices or diversified portfolios, reinforcing the program's emphasis on passive, long-term wealth building over speculation.

Corporate matching and market implications

A number of financial firms, including BlackRock, have pledged to match the government's initial contribution for their employees' children. This employer engagement extends the program's reach beyond direct government funding and signals confidence in the savings vehicle among institutional players.

The selection of traditional ETFs over alternative assets—particularly the explicit ban on crypto—reflects a deliberate policy choice. Supporters say the initiative could substantially expand early participation in equity markets and strengthen long-term household wealth. By anchoring children's first investment experience in diversified, low-cost index funds, the program prioritizes stability and compounding over volatility.
